What Makes the Alabama Bantam Club Spring Show a Must-See Event?

The origins of the Alabama Bantam Club Spring Show are not entirely clear. During the late 1800s, a Rhode Island red bantam breed was introduced in America. This breed was bred to be larger than the common red bantam. Eventually, the Rhode Island red bantam became popular throughout the United States and in Europe.
The show was initially held at the Alabama State Fair Grounds. In order to continue to hold the show, the Alabama Bantam Club petitioned the State Agriculture Department to build a Poultry and Rabbit building on the grounds. The facility hosted numerous shows, ranging from a few hundred birds to over two thousand. However, in the mid-1990s, the fairgrounds closed.
During that time, Mr. Johnson was working to improve the single comb strain of red bantams. He also introduced a line of rose comb bantams. In addition to this, he shared his single-comb strain with other breeders. Soon, these bantams reached the size he desired and grew into brick-shaped birds.

Are You Ready to Weigh In at the Alabama Bantam Club Spring Show?

One of the highlights of the Alabama Bantam Club Spring Show is the Weights Contest. This event is held annually, with prizes awarded to the top three winners in each class. Weights are placed on the Bantams’ coop tags. Weights can be used to determine which bantams are most likely to produce Wyandottes or blocky bantams. Weights can also be used to determine whether a bantam is too big or has lost its true shape.
The weights of the birds must be correct. A bird that is even four ounces off from the required weight will be disqualified. In addition, the color and type of the male and female birds must match, with no more than four ounces difference between them.
