All of these operations must undergo rigorous testing before poultry products can be shipped to consumers. As a result, the poultry industry is a $7 billion industry in Pennsylvania.
The federal government has spent more than $50 million on the Pennsylvania poultry industry since the outbreak of avian influenza in March. The government has provided technical assistance and compensation to poultry farmers for the birds that were destroyed. The total cost of the outbreak has reached $61 million. The federal government has provided reimbursement to the affected farms and integrators, and more than $15 million has been allocated to provide technical assistance and advice.
