Uncovering the History of the Idaho Western Idaho Fair Poultry Show

The Western Idaho Fair’s roots date back to 1897, when the fair was originally known as the Intermountain Fair. It grew out of the need to connect larger cities and to highlight products made by farmers and domestic manufacturers. The Western Idaho Fair is the state’s largest annual event and attracts over two hundred thousand visitors each year.
Originally housed in the Manufacturing Building, the fair moved to its current location in the Progress Building during the 1960s and 1970s. This expanded space allowed for more activities and expanded the fair to include a poultry show. The fair became a must-attend event for the poultry industry, and in the 1980s, it added a luncheon that featured industry fare and became a social gathering. In the last two decades, the show has shifted to focus more on education for producers.
Aside from the traditional livestock and poultry shows, the Western Idaho Fair also features a variety of rides, fried foods, and entertainment. Whether you’re looking for a good time with the family or a place to meet friends, the Western Idaho Fair is a great place to spend your day. And don’t forget the cotton candy and funnel cakes! There are enough rides, concerts, and entertainment to keep everyone happy.
Throughout its history, the Western Idaho Fair has attracted a wide range of entertainment and notable guests. In the past, notable guests have included Charles Lindbergh and Slim Pickens, as well as William Shatner and Ronald Reagan. In addition, in 1971, the fair hosted Paul Revere Raiders and Muhammad Ali. In the past decade, famous entertainers such as REO Speedwagon and Foreigner have performed at the fair.
After the First Idaho Intermountain Fair was held on Glenwood Street, it soon expanded and became known as the Western Idaho Fair. In 1967, the fair moved to the corner of Chinden Boulevard and Glenwood Street. The location was farther from town, but the new location proved to be a better fit for the fair. The new location included a one-mile race track, a grandstand that could hold two thousand spectators, a saloon, and a new exposition building.
