Can Newcastle Disease be Prevented at the San Diego Co. Fair Poultry Show?

The outbreak of Newcastle disease has forced the San Diego County Fair to cancel its poultry exhibits, citing health concerns. According to state veterinarians, more than two dozen cases of the disease have been confirmed in the state. It is a serious disease that affects chicken meat and is caused by direct contact with bodily fluids. If a person comes into contact with a chicken affected by Newcastle disease, they may suffer from flu-like symptoms, such as coughing or sneezing.
While the disease is not harmful to humans, it is devastating to birds and is particularly troublesome when affecting backyard chickens. In recent months, the disease has spread from farm to farm and is particularly deadly in roosters and layers. Since May 2018, the disease has been confirmed in at least 450 locations across the state. The state’s State Veterinarian, Annette Jones, has advised the state to cancel all poultry exhibitions in California.
The last outbreak of Newcastle disease in California occurred in 2002, and the containment effort cost more than $160 million. There is no treatment for the disease, so the only way to eliminate the problem is to euthanize infected birds. This is especially painful for backyard chicken owners because their animals are beloved family pets.
Several shows in Southern California have already been canceled due to the outbreak of Newcastle disease. As a precautionary measure, veterinarians and fair officials have advised fairs to screen the poultry before allowing them into the show. Infected poultry may display symptoms that can include eye inflammation and a mild fever.
