What Does NPIP Testing and Certification Mean for the Carolina Classic Fair Poultry Show?

The NPIP testing and certification program covers several diseases common in poultry. These diseases include avian influenza, diseases caused by Salmonella enteritidis and S. pullorum, and infections caused by Mycoplasma gallisepticum, which causes infectious sinusitis in turkeys. The certification program also covers certain parasites common in poultry.
The NPIP testing and certification program is a voluntary state-federal cooperative program that promotes the health of poultry. These standards apply to commercial and hobbyist poultry operations, and cover a range of diseases. NPIP certified poultry have undergone disease testing for various diseases, including avian influenza, pullorum disease, and typhoid. Because of this, many state and county fairs require NPIP-certified birds to be free of these diseases.
In addition to testing your flock, NPIP certification also provides other benefits. With NPIP certification, your flock will be legal to mail across state lines, and the USDA will reimburse you for diseases like Avian Influenza. Furthermore, if your flock is not NPIP-certified, you can expect your state to depopulate your flock if it contracts any reported diseases, such as Avian Influenza.
