The McHenry County Fair Poultry show is a regional fair that focuses on poultry production. The fair is held each fall, and the pigs and chickens are judged by a panel of experts. In addition to the pigs and chickens, the fair also includes a number of other exhibits. In the early days, there were numerous livestock shows and judging competitions, as well as animal exhibits.
The McHenry County Agricultural Society was founded in 1852. Its founders included Thomas McD. Richards, D.E. Peck, and E. H. Seward. Other organizers included Robert Stewart, E. Buck, and J. E. Beckley. The McHenry County Fair Poultry show is held annually in McHenry County.
In 1839, McHenry County was divided into two counties. The eastern part of the county was named Lake County, and the western portion became McHenry County. Originally, the dividing line was the center of the Fox River. However, residents of McHenry objected to being placed at the very eastern end of the new county border. Today, the McHenry County Fair Poultry Show has become one of the most renowned poultry shows in the Midwest.
The McHenry County Fair continues this year in Woodstock. The fair features a carnival, animals, and daily grandstand events. The horse pulling competition will take place at 6 p.m. on Aug. 3, with tractor and truck pulls following on Aug. 4. On Aug. 4, the Monster Truck Racing League will make their debut and on Aug. 6 the Professional Championship Bull Riders will kick off the show.
The McHenry County Veterans Association was established in 1919. Its first president was Lewis S. Pilcher, who was a local politician. The association has since expanded to include other organizations and committees. During the first fair in 1921, the veterans association held the first poultry show.
McHenry County was created in 1836, and the county seat was originally in the county’s geographical center. Later, the county seat was moved to Woodstock, which was originally called Centerville. Although white settlers were not allowed to settle before 1836, some pushed into the newly ceded Indian lands. The settlers gathered in several parts of the county in 1835, and the county was incorporated in 1836.

The Illinois 4-H Livestock Program is moving away from live poultry shows, opting instead for a virtual format. This move comes in response to the recent ban by the Illinois Department of Agriculture on poultry sales and poultry exhibits, which has resulted in a dramatic spike in egg prices. The ban was initially placed on April 5 and will remain in place for 150 days. It prohibits poultry sales and exhibiting, as well as poultry products sold at auction or flea markets. The ban is intended to limit the spread of avian influenza.
