The Pennsylvania Uniontown Poultry Association is a non-profit organization dedicated to raising chickens and other poultry. The event’s members include the York County Poultry Fanciers, East Ascension FFA, and Baton Rouge FFA. This year’s show is expected to attract 350 domesticated birds.
It’s important for poultry producers to practice biosecurity because it can prevent the spread of disease to birds and other livestock. Although Pennsylvania commercial poultry has been resistant to highly pathogenic avian influenza for nearly 40 years, poultry producers remain on high alert for this virus, which can be devastating to flocks. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, there has been one confirmed case in Pennsylvania, which was in a flock of commercial layer chickens on a Lancaster County poultry farm. The disease has also affected a bald eagle in Chester County.
