On Aug. 13, the Siskiyou and Jackson counties joined forces to put on a livestock auction and poultry show. They coordinated livestock transportation, food trucks, and auction items. Volunteers brought cattle and turkeys to the fairgrounds. A bus service provided transportation to and from the fair. The fairgrounds were packed with visitors and kids wrangled turkeys and brushed cattle. Mary Heffernan, owner of Five Marys Burgers in Fort Jones, Oregon, was on hand to see the livestock.
Josephine County, Oregon, is located in southern Oregon. It is the twenty-second largest county in Oregon by area. It is bounded by California on the south, Jackson and Siskiyou counties on the east, and the Rogue River on the west. The county is also dominated by mountains, with more than seventy percent of the county being classified as forestland.
In 1968, there were nearly twelve hundred families living in Josephine County. As the population grows and the pace of life becomes more difficult, many families are looking for new ways to strengthen family bonds. In Josephine County, there were 332 marriages and 188 divorces in 1968. That was almost one marriage for every two children. In addition, in 1967, 26 children were born to unwed mothers. That means that one in six women in the county is pregnant or expecting. Those women are responsible for 84 of the county’s 493 births.
In addition to livestock, horses are also important economic contributors to Josephine County. There are over two hundred horse owners, and this industry contributes to the county’s economy. The county’s climate is conducive to raising horses.

Who Will Take Home the Blue Ribbon at the Josephine County Poultry Show?

4-H youth can demonstrate their knowledge and mastery of poultry-related project areas by participating in the Oregon Josephine County Fair poultry show. This event showcases their skills with other 4-H youth from across Oregon. During the fair, 4-H youth can earn cash prizes and participate in contests ranging from communications and expressive arts to family and consumer sciences, natural science, and engineering.
Throughout the year, 4-H youth can participate in livestock shows to earn scholarships. Scholarships are awarded based on participation in livestock shows, leadership, community service activities, and an essay. The scholarship program is funded by the proceeds of the annual Youth Livestock Sale of Champions. In 2013, more than $100,600 was raised for the scholarship program. In addition, the fair hosts an annual Black Tie & Boots gala that raises more than $20,000 to support the program.
