What Does Virulent Newcastle Disease Mean for the Salinas Valley Fair Poultry Show?

Virulent Newcastle disease (VND) is a deadly disease that has wiped out dozens of poultry shows throughout the state. Countless other poultry shows have been closed due to the outbreak, including the Salinas Valley Fair. The California State Veterinarian had warned against exhibiting poultry due to the disease. The fair decided to postpone its July 17 poultry show until further notice.
Virulent Newcastle disease (VND) is a highly contagious respiratory disease that affects birds. It spreads quickly and can cause serious illness, which is why it’s essential to quarantine poultry after exposure. While it doesn’t affect meat or eggs, VND is deadly to poultry and threatens the nation’s food supply. The disease was first discovered in Los Angeles County in May of 2018, and it spread rapidly throughout backyard poultry. There have been no other cases in Northern California.
Newcastle disease has not been linked to human consumption, but it can infect people who work with chickens with it. Most of the symptoms are mild and include conjunctivitis and influenza-like symptoms. However, standard protective equipment and good biosecurity practices can prevent the virus from spreading to humans.
The recent outbreak of vND is the third outbreak in California in 50 years. However, there have been no outbreaks in the rest of North America in this timeframe. The outbreak of vND in Southern California spread to Nevada, Texas, and Northern California. The spread outside of this region is attributed to the movement of affected birds from Southern California. In California, over 20,000 noncommercial birds have been euthanized due to the outbreak.
It is vital for poultry owners to follow good biosecurity practices. These practices protect birds from infectious diseases, such as vND. These include washing hands and boots before entering poultry areas, disinfecting equipment, and changing tires before moving poultry. It is also imperative that poultry owners isolate birds returning from shows for 30 days. This is because the virus can spread from one bird to another, even if the bird seems healthy.
